CEO of The Rising Sun Community Newspapers, Vijay Maharaj and President of the Mahatma Gandhi Remembrance Organisation, Mr Mohan Hira amongst other dedicated participants, who have embarked on a 750km peace walk on day 5 spent their night at the correctional services in Volksrust.
This is the place where Gandhi was once imprisoned. This historical way of waking up on heritage day in a prison will be remembered by all participants of the Gandhi Peace Walk.
The senseless killings of our Police, xenophobic attacks, rapes, abuse of women and children, the killing of farmers and innocent civilians has inspired the need for this peace walk.
The cell where Gandhi was once imprisoned has since been restructured into a museum and historical site.
The journey was a very tiring one with lots of aches and blisters. However, this is only a symbol of the life that Gandhi once lived in the fight for peace.
The journey has been chosen covering each little town where Gandhi once visited in his attempt for peace.
Gandhi’s trial took place in Dundee, but he served his sentence in Volksrust.
Day 6 walkers are 15 km towards Newcastle.
We urge the business and private sector to pledge their support towards this initiative by making a donation of R10 per leg of the walk or sponsor the entire distance. All proceeds will be donated towards the Gandhi Development Trust.
Your contribution will help in keeping the beliefs and spirits of Gandhi alive. For more information contact Raj Maharaj on 011 852 0842/3 or email him on rajm@ctp.co.za Keep posted on this website for further updates as the days progress.
