On Friday, February 23, a team of 16 learners, 8 boys and 8 girls represented LMS in a friendly tournament at Hoërskool Riebeeckrand in Randfontein.
Despite undergoing minimal training by their instructor, Br Ahmed Moosa, a professional coach employed by the school, each of the learners produced exceptional results.

The competition was over distances of 10m and 15m. The rivalry was intense as most of the archers hit the required targets. At the end of each stage, scorecards were tallied and the eventual winner was announced. Bibi Ayesha Patel received a gold medal in her category. All the learners received medals for their outstanding performance.

“Well done to all our learners who participated in the tournament, you have made LMS proud.

“May this sport be a means of inculcating a great love for the Sunnah of our Nabi (SAW) and may our Archery team continue to grow from strength to strength. Ameen,” said the Lenasia Muslim School in a statement.a

The Gandhi Walk Committee, its sponsors, partners and many Lenasians are all in a state of euphoria following the 33rd Annual Gandhi Walk which took place on Sunday, April 15, starting and finishing at the iconic Gandhi Hall in Extension 5, Lenasia.

The walk has put Lenasia on the map for all the right reasons and more so that President Cyril Ramaphosa has walked it too, going the full distance of the 12KM Fun Walk. He was join by American civil rights activist Reverend Jesse Jackson and the High Commissioner of India Ms Ruchira Kamboj amongst many other Minsters, MPs, MECs, Miss Earth South Africa, Community Leaders and other distinguished guests. The opening commenced with a helicopter landing by Paramedic Partner ER24, bringing the South African flag and the national anthem played live by the S.A.M.B Brass Band part of team Shaky Russell.

“The Gandhi Walk Committee must be commended for its hard work of truly igniting the spirit of UNITY in our community and bringing it onto the streets of Lenasia for all to experience.”, says Lenasia Ward 9 Cllr Kishore Badal.

He added that engagement by the Gandhi Walk Committee and himself with PIKITUP, City Parks, SAPS and JMPD commenced well in advance of President being confirmed to participate and that these stakeholders delivered accordingly.

The central theme for Gandhi Walk 2018 was going-green with thousands of walkers embracing the official Gandhi Walk Go-Green t-shirt which was also worn by the President to promote awareness and foster a change in attitudes in communities towards environment friendliness.

In keeping with the green theme, the Gandhi Walk Committee together with sponsor partners Rosso Foca and Kaizen handed over a donation amounting to R12,500 to the UJ Hydrogen Innovation Society for the enhancement of its eco race-car which also led the 6KM Gandhi Walk and elated many youngsters as they seen this blue space-age like vehicle whisking through the streets of Lenasia. A pledge by The International Association for Human Values (IAHV) was also presented to Committee chairman Amit Parbhucharan before the start of the 6KM “green” Fun Walk for 500 indigenous trees which will be planted during 2018.

A major accolade was when the Technical Head of the Department of Civil Engineering Science from the University of Johannesburg, Sam van Staden, presented the Gandhi Walk Committee with its certificate from Carbon Neutral Group.

Amit Parbhucharan said that this certificate validates their efforts and commitment to go-green and confirms the offset of 15 tonnes of carbon emissions which was the estimated carbon footprint for Gandhi Walk 2018 as calculated by expert consultants from Carbon Neutral Group.

There were several commemorations and honours awarded at the start line proudly announced by the MCs Shaky Russell and Marlin Govender which included President Cyril Ramaphosa, Reverend Jesse Jackson, Nelson Mandela Foundation for the Madiba Centenary, stalwart Laloo Isu Chiba accepted by his wife Laxmibhen, Google Science Fair 1st Prize Winner Kiara Nirghin, climate change and green activist Catharine Constantinides and for 30 years of community service the Saaberie Chishty Ambulance Service was also honoured and a special blue and red balloon release. Additionally a donation cheque was hand over to Aboobaker Sayed by Gandhi Walk PRO Mahendra Modi. Donations to TIBA Services for the Blind, Ikageng Old Age Relief Centre and Kanye Kanye Recycling Projects are also issued as 2018 beneficiaries of the Gandhi Walk.

This years Gandhi Walk was different with multiple community organisations being included to leverage the platform and allow walkers to walk with other organisations for a purpose which included the #RhinoWALK with SANPark Honorary Rangers; #EarthWALK with UJ Civils with almost 300 UJ students being assisted with transfers by local bus company Eldo Coaches; #WaterWALK with Operation Hydrate, #OupaFatsWALK with the Oupa Fats Wetlenz Park and Lenz Going Green which pulled a 10 meter long dragon boat along the 6km walking route with junior rowers and a flag catcher all inside of it. A special #WALK4Women with NISAA Institute for Women’s Development and the global #RedMyLips campaign being supported by AVON|Justine. A donation of ten thousand (10,000) sanitary pads was handed over to the Feminine Magic Sanitary Pad Collection Drive to help keep girls in school. This was convened with a special handover by the Gandhi Walk Committee, OnTime Readymix Concrete, President Cyril Ramaphosa, Jesse Jackson and Mrs Grand 2018 Finalist Naazneen Ismail. All of this was community in unity in true form!

The winning walkers were judged by Ocular Cycle Club Lenasia who were the official judging partners for both the 12KM and 6KM distances. Winners and times are published on the Gandhi Walk website www.gandhiwalk.org.za. Logistically the Gandhi Walk is a big operation with almost 500 marshals, waterpoint volunteers, JMPD, SAPS, medical personal from ER24 and Saaberie Chishty Ambulance Services, private security officers from MC Security, State protection services  and general volunteers all deployed are on the day to keep walkers safe and hydrated on the walking routes and at the base. Lenasia streets were promptly cleaned up by Ben Dikala Plant Hire and collected waste recycled with PIKITUP and MPACT Recycling.

The afternoon free variety entertainment was a spectacular production by Shaky Russell dubbed Let’s Party also featuring guest pop-sensation Carli J Myers with all sound and lighting for the day provided by JYM Sound and décor and event management courtesy of Event by Chetna.

PRO Mr Mahendra Modi and Chairman Amit Parbhucharan jointly expresses a heartfelt gratitude from the Gandhi Walk Committee to all sponsors, partners, supporters and volunteers who gave selflessly and came together under the spirit of a community in unity to pull off a very successful, vibrant and colourful 33rd Annual Gandhi Walk in Lenasia and now looks forward to the community supporting and doing the next Gandhi Walk in 2019.

Rising Sun Chatsworth Freedom Marathon a massive success

At the crack of dawn on Sunday, it was the 1981 British historical film music, Chariots of Fire, and the thumping sounds of Indian drum beats, that set the tone for the Rising Sun Chatsworth Freedom Marathon.

Thousands of marathon runners from all over South Africa gathered at the start line up at 5:30am and CEO of the Rising Sun Newspapers, Vijay Maharaj, fired the gun for the 52km and 21km races which was then followed by the 10km race.

For the pundits, it was vying for the big bucks, but for the hundreds of novices, it was a life time of an experience, snaking through the streets of Chatsworth and listening to bhangra music. Volunteers took time off their Sunday morning to supply runners with replenishments on route.

Thousands of runners participated in the race which even saw the MEC for KZN Health, Dr Sibongiseni Dhlomo, participate in the grueling race. With the experience Rising Sun Chatsworth Athletic Club has under the expert leadership of Dees Pillay, it was a race with exceptional excellence, well coordinated and a well-planned event.  The club thanked all the sponsors who contributed to making the day a success and the runners and walkers for showing  great enthusiasm and zest while participating in the race.

JAYANT Valab on behalf of St James Preparatory School has taken the initiative to walk from Johannesburg to Durban in a bid to raise funds for school fee subsidies and bursaries so that more children can receive a unique St James education.
“We emphasise critical thinking, so that our children can seek real understanding. I am walking to Durban because I believe in what we are doing at St James Preparatory School. I want to see as many children as possible see their divine sparks lit, and then flourish in the world because of what we are doing together here,” said Mr Valab.
Mr Valab will be walking the 720 km journey despite the small hindrance of walking this distance with a pacemaker. He will be on the road for 3 weeks, starting on August 9th. He will walk six hours daily equating to 30km per day.
“Our mission is to make this a journey of spiritual knowledge, accessible to as many children as possible, and for the St James Marathon Walk to be a success. I would like to see an increasing number of adults and children from our surrounding communities participate in the universal namaste greeting to one another and go on to develop their spirits, minds and bodies through the advantage of a St James education. The ultimate aim is for nurturing lifelong truth, love and service,” Mr Valab said.

Portugal vs Morocco

There’s an old joke that Portugal (and Greece) can’t play great soccer because every time they get a corner, they open a shop.

Not true! When the Nando boys get a corner, the cross is swung over to Ronaldo and the goalie is left with the task of fetching the ball from the back of the net.

It took just four minutes on Wednesday afternoon for the maestro to head home his side’s opening goal in that fashion, and to herald what would be the death knell for the Moroccans.

To their credit, the Atlas Lions never gave up and created a number of decent chances, without reward.

But the only luck they have is bad luck, and – twice goalless and pointless – their World Cup dream is over.

To be fair, the game was an uninspiring one, apart from the opening goal.

It was like watching two armies marking time at double quick pace: plenty of energy, effort and precision – but no progress.

Portugal certainly did close up shop early, keen not to concede, and looked nothing like the side in the 3-3 Group B draw against Spain.

Even Ronaldo was below par but, hey, it’s the 1-0 result that counts.

Exit Morocco; march on Portugal.

Super Eagles brought to earth by Argentina

Argentina arrived in Russia a couple of weeks ago: but they only really pitched up tonight.

However, it took a very late goal for them to ensure their progress in the competition after a 2-1 triumph over Nigeria.

They played with no resemblance to the pathetic performances of their first two Group D encounters.

That includes Lionel Messi, who showed just why he is a super star.

Both teams came out of the blocks with attack in mind, with Argentina looking the sharper but giving the ball away too often.

It took just 14 minutes for the little maestro to reveal his pedigree.

Fed the ball, his superb two-touch control and his splendid technique ensured he never looked like missing as he steered it past teenage keeper Francis Uzoho’s right hand (1-0).

It was a rare right-footed goal for the genius and Argentina should have been a further goal and a man in front when Leon Balogun pulled down goal-bound Angel di Maria and was lucky the ref showed yellow rather than red.

Messi took the responsibility from the edge of box and his special strike needed a fingertip save from Uzoho in the Nigerian goals.

Only 1-0 down at the break, Nigeria were thrown a lifeline in the 48th minute when Javier Mascherano pulled down Balogun to earn a yellow card.

Victor Moses sent the spot kick in one direction and Franco Armani dived in the other as the scoreline now read 1-1.

Nigeria saw Wilfred Ndidi try his luck from range in the 70th minute but the Leicester City man sent the ball into the stratosphere.

Soon after, Nigeria were denied a penalty claim that was not referred to VAR and then hit the side netting from yet another free kick.

The Last Chance Saloon closed its doors on Nigeria in the 85th minute when, after sustained pressure, Man United’s Marcos Rojo’s decent strike put Argentina through and Nigeria out at 2-1.

No shame for the men in green, who made all Africa proud.

The Super Eagles will fly back home, but they will be back!

Peace Walkers return to Lenasia after 1 320 km walk

Nelson Mandela once said, ‘It always seems impossible until it is done’.  Inspired by his words, a group of walkers from  India and Japan  decided to dedicate their lives to walking for peace. Led by the humble Nitin  Sonowane, they  embarked on a 1 320 km peace pilgrimage , which started at Constitution Hill in Johannesburg and ended at Mveso in the Eastern Cape. The group walked in the footsteps of Mandela and Ghandhi, spreading love in the communities they encountered along the way.

The group of walkers came to South Africa with a minimal amount of money. This was done deliberately. The main aim was to be assisted by the locals and to rely on help from the next person, something which cannot be achieved if one has access to money. The team interacted with all races and religions. The spirit of Ubuntu was spread by these peace lovers.

The team spent 5 nights in various police stations, 1 night in a fire station, 2 nights in churches, and many nights in Hindu temples, Gurudawaras, B&B, hotels, resorts and the homes of local people.

Speaking to the Rising  Sun, Yogeshbhai Mathuria  said that South Africans had made their walk easy. He stated that when  they started, a lot of negative things had been said about South Africa, but none of that occurred  while on their journey.

Mathuria said, “ We are very happy to express our personal gratitude to the African people and to all the sections of society that supported our peace walk. All the religious communities  supported us. I would like to make special mention of the South African Police Service. They too supported us. We never felt as if we were walking in an unknown country or felt short of any resources  whatsoever.”

“Our joint mission was to spread the message of peace and non-violence given to this world by the great iconic leaders, the Mahatma Gandhi and Nelson Mandela. As we conclude our peace walk and some of us prepare for our departure to India, we will never forget the South African hospitality,” said another group member.

The team is now spilting into smaller groups and will continue with its world peace journey in different countries. Nitin Sonawane and Ikenda Kanshin will be walking from Gauteng to Zimbabwe, while Yogesh  Mathuria will be walking in Pakistan, Bangladesh and Japan.

SA win the test and the series 4-1

$

The SPAR Indoor Hockey Test Series has flown past in the blink of an eye and just like that it concluded tonight in Dublin in front of a fantastic crowd, with the sound a welcome resonation in the ears of the players.

In an entertaining opening quarter, it was the Irish who struck first when Mikayla Power took an early free hit, caught the South Africans napping and then showed experience beyond her years as she shaped to fire across goal only to fire it straight into the near post and the home crowd gave the appreciation the moment deserved.

The South Africans have shown their class throughout the tournament and showed no panic as they slowly asserted themselves into the game. They were rewarded for their endeavour with a penalty corner from which Jess Lardant restored parity. The opening quarter finishing level, which was an appropriate reflection on the opening exchanges.

If their leveller could be labelled tenacity, the go-ahead goal for the South Africans should simply be entitled clinical precision. Jess O’Connor fired a pinpoint long ball to Eloise Walters, who showed an experienced head to touch it off superbly to Edith Molikoe. The Olympian took the chance like a seasoned veteran and the African visitors had the lead.

After some good possession from Ireland, it was the South Africans who added the next. Robyn Johnson reacted quickest and set the ball up for Tamlyn Kock who finished to earn her first International Goal! The timing of the goal was a sucker punch for the Irish as the hooter to end the third quarter sounded shortly afterwards.

Ireland took the brave approach in the final quarter as they started with the six out field players. They would have to be awake to the South African counterattack, but they started creating chances as the extra player proved helpful in attack. But for the Irish a moment of quick thinking caught them napping and as Kayla de Waal was about to net into an empty goal she was taken out and awarded a penalty stroke. De Waal stepped up to take the stroke but surprisingly she fired it wide.

Ireland continued their superb defensive display when South Africa won a penalty corner and Amy Benson charged it down superbly. But the lack of a keeper was telling, and Edith Molikoe showed exactly how its done as she took the ball into the D and lifted it into the empty net.

Ireland continued to look for a consolation and were unfortunate not to turn their opportunities into goal as they met the wall of the South African defence. There would be no late goalscoring and the match would end 4-1 with the series ending 4-1 too.

Special mention and appreciation must go to SPAR for their tremendous support of the South African Indoor Hockey Women!

Hola Skoko boys get the opportunity of a lifetime

In August 2021, 20 players between the ages of 10 and 16, from Hola Skoko, attended the Africa Italia trials held by Worldwide Scholarships. The intention was for players to have the opportunity to travel overseas for tours and trials.

Of the 20 players who attended the trial, 16 were selected to travel to Milan in Italy.

Unfortunately financial constraints only enabled 4 players to travel to Italy in June 2022 and another 3 players will go in September.

“The first batch of players has done extremely well. We took one 10 year old , two 11 year olds and one 14 year old to Italy and they have done Hola Skoko and Lenasia very proud” , said Coach Nishaan.“This is the opportunity of a lifetime for a lot of players. The set-up is amazing , the facilities are pristine, the coaching structure is immaculate and the calibre of players very high.”

The boys will continue training at Hola Skoko and  coaches will go back to Italy in a few years’ time in search of professional contracts. With other clubs

“This is only the beginning. We have opened the doors for our players and will continue knocking on other doors both locally and abroad to keep giving these players a fighting chance at achieving their dreams,” said Coach Nishaan.

He will implement what he has learnt during the 10 days in Italy and share this knowledge with the academy in order to keep improving and learning as the  game evolves. This is a huge opportunity for football in Lenasia.

We would like to thank WWS and all those people who have assisted through fundraising and sponsorships. We would also like to give special thanks to the Lenasia Model Primary School and to all the SGB members for supporting us in this initiative and for allowing us to promote football at their school.

Soccer Legends to be honoured

TWO great soccer administrators of the SACOS era, the late Sam Khan and Moose Laher, will be honoured at a memorial tournament in Mayfair next month.

Organised by the Gauteng chapter of the SA Fed Soccer Legends, in conjunction with the Greater Mayfair Local Football Association and the South African Masters Sports Association, this event will be held at the Brixton Multipurpose Centre on September 29, starting at 9 am.

Moosa Laher has been involved in amateur soccer since the 1960s and was part of the group that initiated the first truly non-racial South African Soccer League, which was closed down by the apartheid regime.

A motor dealer by profession, Moosa started the Mayfair Football Association when other races moved into what was a previously White area.

Sam Khan, a former boxer, played soccer for the Jack Ellis Football Club in Bakerton in Springs and when he moved to Kliptown, he formed the Cardiff City Football, which was based in Fordsburg and affiliated to the powerful Southern Transvaal Football Union. The club’s name was changed to Lenasia Ramblers in 1967.

During his administrative soccer career, Sam held various positions, nationally, provincially and locally. At various stages, he was vice-chairman of the Lenasia Football Association, chairman of the Transvaal Soccer Board and at the time of unification, he was vice-chairman of the South African Soccer Federation Professional League.

At the launch of the SA Fed Soccer Legends at the Durban City Hall in 2008, Sam was honoured for his services to soccer and the South African Soccer Federation in particular.

When the Gauteng chapter of the SA Fed Soccer Legends was formed in 2010, Sam was unanimously elected chairman, a position he held until 2021 when he gave up all sporting and community activities.

The Masters Memorial Tournament will feature eight veteran teams from Johannesburg, Azaadville, Benoni, Polokwane, Marlboro, Lenasia and Roshnee, as well as Vereeniging Old Boys.

The eight teams will play 20 minutes one way with no half-time break.

Although no prize monies will be awarded, there will be trophies and medals.

The organising committee comprises Joe Taraj, Seraj Abbas, Hanif Loonat, Banjo Cassim, Sameer Thokan and Anees Amod.

LAC members participate in Comrades Marathon 2022

About 15 000 people participated in this year’s gruelling Comrades Marathon, factors beyond the realms of human nature prevented more than 1 500 from completing it. Many local runners were also hard hit by the steep downhills in this year’s down run. Lenasia Athletics Club runners found the going tough, but their preparation for the race made them resilient.

Here are some of the experiences of the runners in their own words…

Amit Morar: My Comrades 2022 journey has been a tough but yet another super achievement. The down run was quite challenging, but there were loads of support along the way from the start to the end. I’m super proud to have finished Sub 11 and achieved my bronze medal.

Jabbar Schroeder: A novice to the down run, I was nervous and anxious about what to expect. I had a race plan, stuck to it, and enjoyed every kilometre of the race. The camaraderie on the road was phenomenal. There was no shortage of support from fellow runners and supporters along the route. See you all again in 2023.

Mayur Chagan: This year’s Comrades was a really special one, not just because we were back after two years, but because I was going for my back-to-back medal. The 8-month build-up was tough and required a lot of mental and physical strength, especially training through the midst of winter. Congratulations to all who completed the marathon.

Pradeep Gowan: Yes I did it!  I ran 90km, completed my 10th Comrades Marathon, and received my permanent ‘Green Number’.  What a brutal, but incredible and unforgettable experience. The start is electrifying, the route is relentless and unforgiving, the support is overwhelming, and crossing the finish line is combination of emotions and pure ecstasy! Yes, it was tough out there. Yes, there were times that I struggled, but I was mentally strong and ecstatic to see myself run to the finish in a time of 10:57. I loved every minute, every step, because I worked hard to be there.

Ahmed Mia:- I am  humbled to have completed my 21st Comrades marathon in a bronze-finishing time of 10h57min. The brutality of this foot race and the strength of mind and body that one needs to complete 90kms surpasses normal human comprehension. It is only through the Grace of the Almighty, the support and patience of family and loved ones during the many arduous months of training, and the steadying hands and supportive words of fellow runners and helpers en route that makes completing this race possible.

Chris Moonsamy: My first comrades was such a phenomenal experience – the music and the vibe at the start line give you goosebumps. When standing among thousands of runners, from elite to novices, only then do we really come to terms with the fact that it is possible. I thank LAC and others runners we meet on the training ground for their support and encouragement.

Calvin Mazibuko : Never give up, great things take time, and tough situations build strong people. You should take small steps and keep moving all the time.

Harshik Budhia: The mere thought of running a 90km race would completely terrify most people. However, for me, it’s an experience that teaches discipline, determination, and strength. Training for my now completed 10th Comrades Marathon was not an easy task. Nothing compares to the pure satisfaction of running past the finishing line. A feeling that I cannot put in words. Although I have now had the “Comrades” experience 10 times, I can shamelessly admit that the feeling is addictive, and the ‘Runner’s Ultimate Marathon’ will definitely see me next year.

Ismail Habbib: The Comrades will help you discover the strengths you never knew you had.

Moazz Casoo: This year was my first Comrades Marathon. I only decided to run the Comrades after qualifying in March in my first official race.

I have done a lot of training before the qualifying race in March. However, if one had to ask me about running the Comrades prior to March 2022, my response was always that I simply was not mad about doing such a long and difficult race.

One word of advice to any novice, be positive and always believe in yourself. Don’t listen to negative people creating doubt in your mind and trying to make you scared. If you don’t try, you will never know.

Naresh Nana: It was another successful year running the Comrades Marathon. It is my 32nd finish and  I still feel there is ”unfinished business“ pending at the Comrades. One is always challenged by this marathon, and every year I come back to rise to this Herculean marathon. Keep moving!

Sheetal Kalian: Being a novice, I was nervous, but excited to participate in the Comrades Marathon 2022 down run. I feel that just getting to the Comrades starting line makes you a winner. It takes hard work, dedication, and months of training to prepare for this gruelling race. As a working mom, I had to keep to a strict and disciplined schedule to fit in training runs along with my other family and work responsibilities. The Comrades Marathon is a tough race, but anything is possible with determination, dedication, and hard work.

Sherina Desai For me the journey is one that builds one’s self believe ,it sheds you off old scales and gives one the zest to be pure in though and believe .Taking the steps on 28 August into cage E were certainly filled with fear and a deep pit in the tummy. Before the big moment ,I prayed for safety , protection and  a comfortable finish. This race brings on the realisation that we are all equal , no monetary balance or profession grades you. I am certainly blessed to have had the opportunity to complete my 15 Comrades. Thanks to the All Mighty.
